2015 Poetry Jam

This year Mr. Hensley, the Middle School librarian asked Faith to represent Bob Miller at the poetry jam. She did a really great job. She recited two original poems from memory. Afterward, Mr. Hensley asked her to go up on the stage again so he could take her picture. He posted this one of the front page of the schools website with the caption "Poetry Winner, Faith Evans" (There were no "winners" per se at the poetry jam, but we think Faith is a winner too and hence, agree with the caption.) She did get another $50 from the school library for participating.

I will post her poems here as soon as I get her permission.

Fragile Organs

I threw my heart out onto the table;
That  bloody pulsating mass.
You took it into your arms,
You caressed it,
And kissed it.
You saw all the sorrow, misery, and pain.
But you saw the light, and the happiness and joy too.

So should I be offended,
That you took just a fleeting look,
Then put it right back into my chest?
I always thought hearts were meant to be given and kept.
Or should I be grateful,
That you so gently gave it back?
And kindly explained that you were to queasy,
And not quite yet ready,
To see my heart out on the table.

Little Bird

Look up, Little Bird, Look up.
Your nest is high above.
A summer breeze came blowing by;
You caught on its wind and flew to the sky!
But you tumbled down from your place up high.
Now all you can do is look up.

Look up, Little Bird, Look up.
View your former home.
The ground's a dangerous place;
An unsure future - yours is a sad case.
For flightless fowl on the ground, peril awaits!
Now all you can do is look up.

Look up, Little Bird, Look up.
Cast your eyes heavenward.
It's always good to have hope;
Optimism can help the helpless cope,
If only the Universe's language was trope.
Now all you can do is look up.

Look up, Little Bird, Look up.
Watch for a rescuer.
Your fate is in the air;
You're not yet in the enemy's snare,
Stay alert and aware; do not yet despair!
Now all you can do is look up.

What a darling girl! Don't you just love her? Me too!! What an easy way to get $50.

See? Writing is lucrative . . . if you're Faith Evans.

Faith IS a winner! What a cute picture. I'm anxious to read her poetry. Or better yet, hear her perform it!

That's so great! What a fantastic girl... wait she's a young woman now, you have. I can see her winning at everything she does in life.

Wow. Those are really good! No wonder she was declared (however suspiciously) a winner.

How fun to read the poems. All kinds of feelings - from caressing a bloody beating heart to loving the person..both people really. Then wondering about a poor crippled little bird, who maybe should be running for cover until it heals enough to soar.

Of course that leads us to the more insightful questions...Aren't we all little birds. And isn't our only hope to look up to God and live.
